Reading

Developing a love of reading at Ellison Boulters

At Ellison Boulters, we aim to develop a love of reading throughout school. Reading is a key skill that develops our knowledge and understanding to engage with the world around us. Not only does it provide us with widened vocabulary, comprehension and deeper understanding across the curriculum , it also provides a sense of comfort, mindfulness, relaxation and fun.

Ellison Boulters are working towards the Bronze Award of the Lincolnshire Reading Pledge. The Lincolnshire Reading Pledge has been developed by Witham St Hughs English Hub and L.E.A.D. Teaching School Hub, working in collaboration with Professor Teresa Cremin (Reading for Pleasure & The Open University).

Reading within our curriculum

Reading is an integral part of our school's English and wider curriculum. Through our English lessons, each unit is linked to a book/ extract from a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We begin by reading and using VIPERS to develop our understanding of texts, the next stage is to analyse the text: Who is it for? Why is it written? What features are in the text? Finally, we find our own author's voice by writing our own texts.

Alongside our curriculum learning, we have a passion of Reading for Pleasure. Time to share books everyday is a priority at Ellison Boulters and we love reading together.
