Year 3: Coleman Class - Miss Toyne

As part of our learning about the Stone Age, Year 3 enjoyed a brilliant trip to Creswell Crags. We explored the Robin Hood cave and became palaeontologists, learning about the bones of prehistoric animals before trying to reconstruct an animal skeleton – including a hyena, prehistoric fox, prehistoric wolf and cave lion! In the afternoon, we learned about life in the Stone Age by building shelters, learning to throw spears and how to start fires. We ended the day with a lovely walk exploring the beautiful Creswell gorge.

Year 3 began our learning about Scavengers and Settlers with a fantastic WOW day! We started the day by watching the first instalment of our class book, Stig of the Dump before heading outside into the Forest School area for a scavenger hunt. When we came back inside, we learned about cave paintings before having a go at our own cave drawings, laid in darkness under the tables. In the afternoon, we were challenged to work in teams to make a present for Stig’s cave using materials which we had collected for junk modelling.

The Willow class have loved their afternoons in the Forest School area. Week One: making waterproof rainforest dens Week Two: making a defence weapon to keep us safe

Rainforest facts for this term's topic!

Year 3/4’s knowledge organiser for their Rainforest topic. This knowledge organiser contains all of the essential facts, features and vocabulary that the children will cover during the Autumn Term.

Year 3’s knowledge organiser for Maths. This knowledge organiser has been designed to support the children by summarising the key features of mathematics in lower key stage 2.

Our current topic in Year 3/4 is ‘Food and Farming’. We are transforming our classrooms into food and farming havens where we will be discovering more about the meals we eat and how plants are grown. Our topic will draw on our imaginations, encouraging us to think about local and global farming practices, fair trade and future sustainability.

Our WOW day!

What an explosive start to our new Autumn topic - Active Planet!

Year 3 and 4 started the term with a bang, experimenting with incredible exploding volcanoes using bicarbonate of soda, red food dye and vinegar. We wondered whether our volcanoes were extinct or dormant but it soon became clear they were extremely active and even erupting!

Thank you children and parents for all the brilliant models that have been coming in. We are trying to identify whether they are based on famous volcanoes like Vesuvius, Eyjafjallajökull or Mount Fuji. We have quite a few danger zones in school now so be warned...you enter at your own risk! Wear protective volcanologist clothing please for your own safety.

Why not try this website to find out more about the world's incredible erupting volcanoes:
